Before you commit to any car loan, you should be able to compute the monthly payment yourself. In the Philippines almost every dealer and bank quotes an add-on rate, and if you do not understand how it works, two offers that look similar can cost very different amounts. This guide shows the exact math on real used-car prices from our lot, so you can check any quote in under a minute.

How the add-on computation works

An add-on rate is applied to the full amount you finance, for every month of the term — it does not shrink as you pay the loan down. That is why the monthly stays flat and why the real cost is higher than the headline rate suggests. At RideAgain, buyer financing through our lending partners starts from 1.40% per month add-on, subject to credit approval.

To compute a monthly, you only need three numbers: the amount financed (price minus down payment), the monthly add-on rate, and the term in months.

The formula, step by step

The add-on monthly payment is simply the principal plus all the interest, divided evenly across the term:

StepComputation
1. Amount financedPrice − down payment = P
2. Total interestP × monthly rate × number of months
3. Total payableP + total interest
4. Monthly paymentTotal payable ÷ number of months
Tip: Because the interest is fixed for the whole term, a longer tenor lowers the monthly but raises the total you pay. Always look at the total payable before you sign — a lower monthly is not automatically the cheaper loan.

A worked example on a ₱590k Vios

Take our 2025 Toyota Vios 1.3 XLE CVT, listed at ₱590,000 (July 2026). Say you put 20% down (₱118,000), so you finance ₱472,000 over 60 months at a 1.40% per-month add-on rate:

These figures are illustrative — your actual rate, term and approval depend on the lender and your credit assessment. But the method is exactly what any honest computation follows.

2016 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLX, a low-price used sedan example
A cheaper starting point: the 2016 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLX, listed at ₱230,000 (July 2026) keeps both the amount financed and the monthly small.

Sample monthly payments across price points

Here is the same math applied to three real units at 20% down, 1.40%/month add-on, over 60 months. Use it as a sanity check, not a quote:

UnitPriceFinanced (80%)Est. monthly (60 mo)
Mirage G4 GLX (2016)₱230,000₱184,000≈ ₱5,643
Honda City 1.5 VTEC (2018)₱381,000₱304,800≈ ₱9,347
Toyota Vios XLE (2025)₱590,000₱472,000≈ ₱14,475

How the down payment changes your monthly

The single biggest lever on your monthly is the down payment, because it shrinks the amount financed and the interest computed on it. On that same ₱590k Vios, moving from 20% to 30% down drops the financed amount to ₱413,000 and the estimated 60-month monthly to about ₱12,665 — roughly ₱1,800 less per month. Our used-car down payment guide goes deeper, and how much car you can afford helps you set a comfortable ceiling first.

Fees that sit outside the monthly

Your monthly is not the whole story. Budget for a one-time chattel mortgage and processing fee — at RideAgain this starts from 6.95% of the amount financed — plus documentary stamp tax, and LTO registration and transfer costs. These are typically settled upfront or on the first billing. For the difference between the quoted add-on rate and what you truly pay, read add-on vs effective interest rate.

When you have a unit in mind, we will give you a clear, personalised computation before anything is signed.

Frequently asked questions

How is a car loan monthly payment computed in the Philippines?

Most local car loans use an add-on rate. The lender multiplies the amount financed by the monthly rate and the number of months to get the total interest, adds it to the principal, then divides by the number of months. So on a ₱400,000 balance at 1.40% per month for 60 months, interest is ₱400,000 × 0.014 × 60 = ₱336,000, and the monthly is (₱400,000 + ₱336,000) ÷ 60 ≈ ₱12,267. Final figures depend on the lender and credit approval.

Is an add-on rate the same as the interest my bank quotes?

No. An add-on rate is charged on the full original amount for the whole term, so the true (effective) cost is noticeably higher than the headline number. Two loans with the same add-on rate but different terms can have very different effective rates. Always compare the total amount payable, not just the monthly.

What is the minimum down payment for a used car loan?

It varies by lender, unit age and your profile, but many used-car loans start around 20% of the price. A bigger down payment lowers the amount financed and therefore your monthly. We can walk you through options for a specific unit.

Are there fees on top of the monthly payment?

Yes. Expect a one-time chattel mortgage and processing fee — at RideAgain this starts from 6.95% of the amount financed — plus documentary and registration costs. These are usually deducted upfront or added to the first billing, not spread across every monthly.
